At Least 19 Killed in Attack on Presidential Palace in Chad’s Capital

N'DJAMENA,On Wednesday evening, gunshots were heard near the presidential palace in N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, sparking concerns about security in the country. Residents reported hearing multiple shots near the compound, raising fears of instability in a region often plagued by coups.

The source of the gunfire was unclear at first, but videos from the scene showed military vehicles and heavily armed soldiers on the streets and around the presidential palace. Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah addressed the situation in a Facebook live broadcast, reassuring the public that the situation was "completely under control" and there was "no fear."

However, new reports indicated that the gunfire was part of an attack on the presidential palace. According to the AFP news agency, at least 19 people were killed in the assault, including 18 militants. Early reports from local media outlets, such as tchadinfos, revealed that unidentified gunmen had attacked the palace. The Chadian armed forces were quick to repel the attackers, with tanks and police units deployed around the area to ensure the palace’s security.

Sources from the Al Arabiya TV channel suggested that the Boko Haram terrorist group was behind the attack. This adds to growing concerns about regional security, particularly given the frequent threats from extremist groups operating in the Sahel.

In response to the attack, residents of N'Djamena gathered in the capital, showing their support for Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, who has faced increasing security challenges during his leadership.

The attack on the presidential palace underscores the ongoing volatility in Chad, a country that has seen significant unrest and violence in recent years. Despite these challenges, the Chadian government has remained firm in its response, seeking to maintain stability in a region marked by conflict.
