Abidjan Selected to Host the Green Climate Fund’s Regional Office for Africa

The 44th meeting of the Board of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), held in Incheon, Republic of Korea, from March 25 to 28, 2026, officially designated Abidjan as the host city for its Regional Office for Africa, covering West Africa, Central Africa, and part of North Africa.

The selection of Abidjan reflects the institution’s confidence in Côte d’Ivoire’s stability, economic dynamism, and strong commitment to climate action. It also reinforces the country’s position as a key player in climate initiatives across the African continent.

Through this major decision, endorsed at the end of the Board meeting, Côte d’Ivoire—under the leadership of President Alassane Ouattara and Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé—takes a significant step forward on the international stage in terms of climate governance.

With this strategic presence, the Green Climate Fund aims to significantly increase the impact of its interventions by strengthening coordination of climate projects, providing enhanced technical support to countries, and facilitating access to climate financing.

Hosting this regional office opens up major opportunities for Côte d’Ivoire and the African continent as a whole, particularly in sustainable and resilient agriculture, renewable energy development, sustainable natural resource management, and efforts to combat the effects of climate change.

This establishment is also expected to generate jobs and foster the development of stronger local expertise in climate finance.

By hosting this regional office, Côte d’Ivoire reaffirms its commitment to climate action and demonstrates its capacity to play a leading role in implementing and coordinating climate policies across Africa.

As part of expanding its global presence, the Board of the Green Climate Fund has also designated other host cities for its regional offices: Nairobi will cover East and Southern Africa, Panama City will serve Latin America and the Caribbean, and Jordan will host the office responsible for Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
