Abissa 2025: The Popular Phase in Full Swing in Grand-Bassam

Drums pounding, dancers moving in rhythm, whistles echoing, dust swirling, and laughter filling the air — the 2025 edition of Abissa has entered its most vibrant stage. On Sunday, October 12, the traditional festival officially launched its popular phase, known as Gouazo, at the public square of the Quartier France in Grand-Bassam.

This marks the second major stage of the celebration, following the presentation of the sacred drum, the Edo-Ngboléa, to the people by His Majesty Amon Tanoh Désiré, King of the Nzima and President of the Chamber of Kings and Traditional Chiefs of Côte d’Ivoire.

The day began in the royal courtyard, where traditional libations and ritual dances set the tone. Drummers then played the three symbolic rhythms of Abissa, sending waves of energy through the crowd as the festivities spread throughout the city.

At the packed town square, youths and women, many dressed in traditional loincloths and cultural attire, brought the celebration to life in a dazzling display of color, movement, and unity.

A symbol of unity, continuity, and cultural transmission, Abissa honors all generations — from the Pépinières (ages 5–15) to the Sages (60 and above), with the Espoirs and Forces vives proudly bridging the gap between them.

The festivities will continue until October 18, 2025, featuring the preselection of young instrumentalists and culminating in the triumphant arrival of King Amon Tanoh Désiré, marking the grand conclusion of this year’s celebration.
