Abissa Festival Proposed for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List

Grand-Bassam, May 18, 2025 (AIP) – The Minister of Culture and Francophonie, Françoise Remarck, announced in Grand-Bassam the government's commitment to a process aimed at inscribing the Abissa festival on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

During the inauguration of the Maison de l’Art (House of Art), a new space dedicated to showcasing Ivorian craftsmanship and artistic expressions, held on Wednesday, May 15, 2025, Ms. Remarck explained that this initiative is part of efforts to promote and preserve Abissa, a true pillar of national cultural identity and of the N’zima Kotoko people.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012 for its historic urban fabric, the city of Grand-Bassam now aspires to expand its international influence by highlighting its intangible heritage.

“The celebration of Abissa, enriched by the presence of artists and designers, and the promotion of local skills in ceramics, weaving, basketry, bronze work, and sculpture, deserves to be recognized as part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage. With the Maison de l’Art, Grand-Bassam can become a true cultural hub for Côte d’Ivoire and the sub-region,” stated the Minister.

Abissa is a popular festival deeply rooted in the traditions of the N’zima Kotoko people. Celebrated every October, it combines purification rituals, dancing, music, traditional attire, and open dialogue between leaders and citizens, all in a spirit of unity and social renewal.
