In Côte d’Ivoire, the government is intensifying its efforts to promote civic responsibility among young people. This initiative is reflected in the expansion of civic service centers, which are dedicated facilities focused on social rehabilitation and professional integration for youth who have drifted away from societal values.
Within these centers, participants receive structured supervision based on discipline, respect for rules, and citizenship education. Young people who have not attended school are enrolled in literacy programs to support their learning and future integration into society and the labor market.
“I am learning sewing, and being able to read and write helps me take measurements independently,” said Joëlle Kouassi, a resident.
After this foundational phase, participants are directed toward vocational training in various fields such as cooking, livestock farming, tailoring, hairdressing, makeup, and construction-related trades.
“My parents enrolled me in the civic service center to help me improve my behavior. Since I am passionate about mechanics, I chose the construction and public works field to learn the profession,” explained Fidèle Otto, a trainee volunteer.
The goal of these programs is to instill civic values and provide young people with a second chance for professional integration. In 2025, a total of 55,496 young people benefited from civic service programs nationwide.
