Côte d’Ivoire Mobilizes Emergency Response Following Heavy Rains in Greater Abidjan

Following the heavy rainfall recorded in Greater Abidjan over the past few days, the Prime Minister of Côte d’Ivoire, Robert Beugré Mambé, chaired an emergency meeting on Monday, June 29, 2026, bringing together members of the Ivorian Government, the mayors of Greater Abidjan, and all stakeholders involved in disaster risk management.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister conveyed the message of sympathy and solidarity from the President of the Republic, Alassane Ouattara, to the families who lost loved ones and to everyone affected by the severe weather.

He also announced a series of immediate measures aimed at strengthening the protection of affected communities. These include identifying relocation sites, relocating impacted households, providing social assistance to affected families, and continuing the development of a permanent resettlement site in Songon.

The Minister of the Interior and Security, Vagondo Diomandé, urged the public to act more responsibly, noting that this year's rainy season has brought significantly more rainfall than in previous years. He regretted that, despite preventive measures and extensive public awareness campaigns, some residents failed to comply with safety recommendations.

"Everyone must understand that one of the main causes of what is happening is a lack of civic responsibility," Minister Vagondo Diomandé stated.

It is worth recalling that the SODEXAM had previously warned the public that the 2026 rainy season would be particularly intense, with above-average rainfall expected, especially across the District of Abidjan and along the entire Ivorian coastline.
