Côte d’Ivoire strengthens regional judicial cooperation

The President of the Court of Cassation of Côte d’Ivoire, Joachim Yua Koffi, and the President of the Court of Justice of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) Court of Justice, Kuami Gameli Lodonou, signed a judicial cooperation agreement in Abidjan on June 15, 2026, aimed at strengthening judicial governance across the regional bloc.

According to Joachim Yua Koffi, the agreement goes beyond a simple legal act and reflects a shared vision founded on solidarity, reciprocity, and the exchange of expertise between the two institutions.

"The signing of this agreement marks the beginning of a cooperation that will deliver concrete and lasting results for the strengthening of the rule of law within the UEMOA area," he said.

He emphasized that this partnership between a national supreme court and a regional judicial body represents a significant example of legal and institutional integration at the regional level.

For his part, Kuami Gameli Lodonou noted that both courts share the same mission: to uphold and properly administer the law. He added that they are guided by the same principles of independence and impartiality.

"This agreement demonstrates that the complementarity between the Community legal order and national legal systems is not a conflict of norms, but rather a source of strength and enrichment," he stated.

The cooperation framework is expected to promote the exchange of experiences, the sharing of best practices, capacity-building for judges and judicial personnel, as well as the development of joint initiatives in areas falling within their respective jurisdictions.
