Côte d’Ivoire: Zero Tolerance for Major Traffic Violations to Strengthen Road Safety

Abidjan, February 2026 – In response to a concerning rise in traffic accidents, the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs has announced the implementation of a zero-tolerance policy for major traffic violations on Ivorian roads.

Since January 1, 2026, 519 accidents have been recorded, resulting in 164 deaths and 1,934 injuries, averaging 4 fatalities per day. This alarming situation has prompted authorities to take urgent measures to protect road users.

The new policy targets serious violations, including driving without a license, lack of insurance, failure to pass vehicle inspections, driving under the influence of alcohol, overloading and excess passengers, poor vehicle conditions, worn tires, and failure to wear helmets on two- and three-wheeled vehicles.

Unannounced inspection missions will be conducted at all vehicle inspection centers, and any center failing to comply with the terms of its accreditation will be immediately closed.

The Ministry also announced specific measures for transport operators carrying butane gas, hydrocarbons, sand and gravel, concrete, or waste. Urgent meetings will be organized to ensure strict compliance with road safety regulations in these sectors, which are considered particularly sensitive for public safety.

Authorities are calling for collective responsibility to make roads safer. Enforcement forces are mobilized to strictly apply these measures, reduce accidents, and protect lives, reinforcing road safety as a national priority in Côte d’Ivoire.
