CNDH and UN Discuss Key Human Rights Challenges in Côte d’Ivoire

Meeting between the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) and the United Nations System: discussions focused on current human rights challenges

The Executive Bureau of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) held talks on Wednesday, May 13, with the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Ms. Hélène N’Garnim-Ganga, to discuss key issues related to the promotion and protection of human rights in Côte d’Ivoire.

During the meeting, both parties welcomed the progress made in recent years in the field of human rights. However, they also acknowledged that several challenges remain and require stronger engagement from national institutions and international partners.

The discussions particularly focused on the need to strengthen reflection and action regarding the rights of elderly people. The President of the CNDH, Adjelou Arnaud Christian, emphasized the importance of improving social, health, and psychological care for older persons in order to ensure their dignity and full participation in society.

The right to health and education for autistic children also featured prominently in the exchanges. Both sides stressed the urgency of promoting inclusive policies that improve access to specialized healthcare, tailored educational support, and community awareness of autism spectrum disorders.

The talks also addressed challenges related to the education of girls, seen as a key driver of sustainable development and community empowerment. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to supporting initiatives that keep girls in school and remove social barriers that could hinder their future.

In addition, environmental rights were a major point of concern. Faced with the growing impacts of climate change, participants highlighted the need to strengthen awareness efforts and protection measures for populations affected by environmental degradation.

Illegal gold mining was also discussed. The CNDH President and the UN Resident Coordinator noted its environmental, health, and social impacts, calling for a coordinated response involving public authorities, civil society, and technical and financial partners.

This meeting reflects the shared commitment of the CNDH and the United Nations System to continue working together to improve human rights protection and promote inclusive development for all segments of the Ivorian population.
