The Ministry of Environment and Ecological Transition (MINETE) officially submitted on Thursday, June 4, 2026, a project supported by the United Nations Development Programme (United Nations Development Programme) to the Loss and Damage Fund (FRLD). The submission took place during a ceremony held at the UNDP headquarters in the Plateau district of Abidjan.
Valued at approximately 20.5 million US dollars, the project titled “Integrated Strengthening of the Resilience of Critical Infrastructure, Vulnerable Ecosystems, and Livelihoods of Coastal Communities Exposed to Climate Loss and Damage” aims to enhance Côte d’Ivoire’s climate resilience by protecting strategic infrastructure and coastal ecosystems.
Representing the Minister of Environment and Ecological Transition, Abou Bamba, Chief of Staff Parfait Kouadio welcomed the submission, stating that it reflects the shared commitment of the Ivorian government and UNDP to implement concrete and structured responses to climate-related loss and damage, in line with national priorities on adaptation, resilience, and the protection of vulnerable populations.
He also expressed gratitude to UNDP for its continued support to the ministry. “Beyond its institutional scope, this submission represents a true message of hope for populations facing the effects of climate change, particularly the most vulnerable communities,” he said.
For his part, UNDP Resident Representative Deputy in Côte d’Ivoire, Gaël Ollivier, noted that the project addresses the increasingly severe impacts of climate change in the country, including recurrent flooding, coastal erosion, disruptions to agricultural activities, ecosystem degradation, economic losses, and weakened livelihoods.
The initiative is part of the Barbados Implementation Modalities (BIM) 2025–2026 call for proposals launched by the Loss and Damage Fund Secretariat. With a total envelope of 250 million US dollars, the mechanism allocates 50% of its resources to developing countries, including Côte d’Ivoire. The call, open since December 15, 2025, will close on June 15, 2026.
