Empowering Rural Women: Government Supports Agricultural Cooperatives

In Côte d’Ivoire, the government is implementing initiatives to support women working in the agricultural sector. The goal is to boost their production and foster greater empowerment.

In Guiembé, in the Poro region, women from the Kindènè cooperative, specialized in producing orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, have been equipped with solar-powered pumps and agricultural inputs through the Government’s Social Program Support Project (PaPSGouv). These resources aim to improve yields and ease fieldwork.

“We have received watering cans, boots, fertilizers, and now pumps. Having access to water here helps us irrigate the fields more easily. Farm work has become less difficult,” explained Tchewa Yeo.

In M’brimbo, near Tiassalé in the Agneby-Tiassa region, the women of the Oyofê cooperative cultivate cassava and rice on three hectares of land.

Composed of 42 members, this women’s cooperative contributes to food security across the region. In 2024, they received agricultural inputs from the Regional Council as well as training on modern vegetable production methods, delivered by the National Agency for Rural Development Support (ANADER).

“The cultivable land had become infertile. Thanks to this government support, we were able to solve this problem and produce sufficiently last year,” said Akouba Koffi, the cooperative’s treasurer.

Between 2023 and 2024, a total of 12,169 tons of vegetables were produced and marketed across Côte d’Ivoire under PaPSGouv.

Several other programs are also underway to support women in the agricultural sector and strengthen their economic autonomy, such as the DICEFA program (Development of Women’s Initiatives and Economic Capacities for Empowerment), launched on September 19, 2025. The program aims to create 200 women-led businesses and support 10,500 cooperatives in rural and peri-urban areas.
