Global Health: Nangui Abrogoua University Hosts Second Scientific Day on Research and Innovation in African Pharmacopoeia

The second edition of the Scientific Day dedicated to the promotion of research and innovation in African pharmacopoeia and natural substances was held on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at Nangui Abrogoua University (UNA) in Abobo-Adjamé. The event focused on the theme “Natural Substances and Their Role in Holistic Health.”

Organized by the African Pharmacopoeia and Natural Substances Center (PPASN) of UNA, the event welcomed several distinguished participants, including Prof. Daouda Aïdara, Vice President of the Academy of Sciences, Arts, Cultures of Africa and African Diasporas (ASCAD); Prof. Yaya Karamoko, Vice President of UNA; Jean Bosco Ki, UNESCO Deputy Resident Representative; and Prof. Mamyrbekova Janat Akhanovna Békro, Director of the PPASN.

During the opening lecture, Prof. Békro Yves-Alain, Director of the Bio-Organic Chemistry of Natural Substances Laboratory at UNA, highlighted how science and chemistry can leverage natural resources to promote integrated and global health.

“Natural substances represent an immense resource for human health. They are rich in bioactive molecules used in phytotherapy, nutrition, and cosmetics, and they play a key role in disease prevention and the preservation of traditional therapeutic heritage. In a holistic approach, their true value emerges when integrated into a balanced combination of tradition, science, and modern health. They remain a source of hope for future health, provided they are properly regulated,” he emphasized.

Jean Bosco Ki stressed that the use of natural substances in healthcare is also a priority for UNESCO. As a United Nations agency with mandates in science, education, and culture, UNESCO recognizes traditional pharmacopoeia as a strategic lever for scientific sovereignty, biodiversity promotion, and the development of locally adapted therapeutic solutions.

“In this context, UNESCO stands ready to support the development of UNA’s African Pharmacopoeia and Natural Substances Center through key actions: dissemination and valorization of research results nationally and internationally, strengthening international scientific cooperation, creation of a UNESCO Chair in African Pharmacopoeia and Natural Substances, valorization of traditional knowledge, development of partnerships, and joint resource mobilization,” he stated.

According to Prof. Mamyrbekova Janat Akhanovna Békro, the main mission of PPASN is to promote natural substances by developing scientifically validated phyto-products based on Ivorian resources.

The center unites three specialized research laboratories: Bio-Organic Chemistry and Natural Substances; Botany and Plant Diversity Valorization; and Physiology, Pharmacology, and Pharmacopoeia.

The Scientific Day also featured an exhibition of research-based products, highlighting innovation and applied research in the field.
