On December 19, 2025, the Abidjan Cardiology Institute successfully performed a groundbreaking cardiac resynchronization procedure, also known as biventricular pacing. This intervention took place as part of the Canadian interventional rhythmology mission, held from December 15 to 20, 2025.
The procedure was led by Professor N’Djessan Jean Jacques, a rhythmology specialist at the Abidjan Cardiology Institute, in collaboration with expert teams from Canada. Cardiac resynchronization involves implanting electrical leads into the heart chambers to stimulate both the left and right ventricles simultaneously, correcting conduction delays. It is primarily used in the management of left bundle branch block.
This condition causes the left ventricle to contract later than the right ventricle, significantly reducing the heart’s pumping efficiency. According to Professor N’Djessan, biventricular pacing restores better synchronization between the ventricles and improves the patient’s cardiac function.
The intervention is part of the ICA-Mitrelli joint project, “Cardiology Initiative,” which aims to strengthen the capabilities of ICA medical teams in managing adult cardiac rhythm and conduction disorders in Côte d’Ivoire.
Through this pioneering operation, the Abidjan Cardiology Institute confirms its position as a regional leader in cardiovascular care and demonstrates its commitment to strengthening international partnerships for the benefit of patients.
