Heatwave in Côte d’Ivoire: SODEXAM Warns of High Temperatures Until the End of March

SODEXAM has announced that an intense heatwave is currently affecting the entire territory of Côte d’Ivoire. In an information note released to the press, the national meteorological agency indicated that this phenomenon, observed since the end of February 2026, is expected to persist until the end of March.

According to the note, this rise in temperatures is mainly caused by particularly strong solar radiation reaching the country directly and earlier than usual. This period also coincides with what is generally considered the annual peak of heat in Côte d’Ivoire.

In the inland regions, particularly in the north and central areas, recorded temperatures are especially high, ranging between 35°C and 39°C, well above seasonal averages based on the reference period 1991–2020. The presence of the Harmattan wind in these areas further intensifies the phenomenon.

The meteorological agency warns of potential health risks associated with this period of extreme heat. Thermal discomfort can lead to dehydration, hyperthermia, or heatstroke, with children, the elderly, and those with chronic or dermatological conditions being the most vulnerable.

In response to this situation, SODEXAM recommends avoiding prolonged sun exposure, especially during the hottest hours of the day, drinking sufficient amounts of water regularly, and closely monitoring weather forecasts to better plan daily activities.
