Inter-Army exercise “betranmasse”: ivorian armed forces strengthen operational readiness

On the instructions of the Chief of Defence Staff, the Ivorian Army conducted the “BETRANMASSE” exercise (“No Rest” in Baoulé language) from 7 to 23 May 2026 in Lomo Nord, in the Toumodi department (City in central Côte d’Ivoire)

This large-scale exercise aimed to test, under real conditions, inter-arm coordination and the mastery of operational skills acquired by Army personnel prior to deployment in the Northern Operational Zone (Zon).

Approximately 2,500 soldiers took part, drawn from various Army units, including the 2nd Infantry Battalion of Daloa, the 3rd Infantry Battalion of Bouaké, the North-West Security Battalion (BSNO), and the East Security Battalion (BSE). They were supported by detachments from the 1st Armored Battalion (BB), the Ground-to-Air Artillery Battalion (Basa), the Ground-to-Ground Artillery Battalion (BASS), and the 1st Engineer Battalion, ensuring effective interoperability and experience sharing.

A key highlight of the exercise was the VIP Day held on Friday, 22 May. During this event, the exercise command team presented the entire operational setup in a tactical command room prepared for the occasion, in the presence of General of the Army Lassina Doumbia, Chief of Defence Staff, accompanied by Major General Cherif Ousmane, Chief of Staff of the Army, as well as unit commanders of the engaged forces.

On the training ground, observers witnessed live-fire drills using both heavy and light weapons, as well as a simulated brigade-level zone control operation. Based on joint tactical group actions, the exercise tested the operational readiness of personnel under near-real combat conditions.

In conclusion, the “BETRANMASSE” inter-arm tactical exercise reflects the continuous commitment of the military high command to strengthening the operational preparedness of its forces before deployment. It also contributes to the long-term consolidation of national security and demonstrates the Armed Forces’ ability to maintain a stable and coordinated presence in a demanding environment.
