Kandia Camara Highlights Ivorian Initiatives for Lasting Peace at Geneva Summit

Abidjan, July 28, 2025 – The President of the Senate of Côte d’Ivoire, Mrs. Kandia Camara, shared the Ivorian experience in promoting inclusive and sustainable peace through women’s leadership, sustainable development, women’s empowerment, and their inclusion in decision-making processes on Monday, July 28, 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland, during the 15th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament.

According to a statement sent to AIP, this global summit—bringing together the highest-ranking female parliamentary leaders—is organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in partnership with the Swiss Parliament and hosted at the International Labour Organization (ILO) headquarters.

During the first session, the President of the Ivorian Senate highlighted Côte d’Ivoire’s progress around women, peace, and security. She referenced the adoption of two national action plans, women’s participation in reconciliation processes, support for community mediation initiatives led by women’s associations, and the training of women in the security sector.

In the second session, focused on “new challenges to inclusive and sustainable peace and the way forward,” Mrs. Kandia Camara emphasized efforts to strengthen women’s resilience to climate change, particularly through gender integration in public policies, the promotion of improved cookstoves, and women's involvement in land governance.

She underscored that a sustainable response to climate issues requires the systematic integration of gender approaches in all environmental policies, as well as the improvement of women’s access to resources, technology, and information.

This summit, held in a year that is highly symbolic for women’s rights—marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and the 10th anniversary of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)produced a wealth of recommendations. These will feed into the discussions of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, scheduled from July 29 to 31, 2025.

The active participation of Mrs. Kandia Camara, accompanied by members of the Ivorian Senate, in this summit held under the theme “Women Speakers for Inclusive and Sustainable Peace” reflects Côte d’Ivoire’s commitment to promoting strong female leadership and strengthening the role of women in peace, security, and sustainable development processes.
