Large-scale crackdown on traffic violations: 256 vehicles and 82 motorcycles immobilized

In Abidjan on March 5, 2026, the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs of Côte d’Ivoire, in coordination with the National Police of Côte d’Ivoire and the National Gendarmerie of Côte d’Ivoire, conducted a large-scale operation aimed at cracking down on traffic violations.

The initiative, carried out under the operation “Zero tolerance on our roads,” recorded by midday the inspection of 883 vehicles, including 256 that were immobilized. Authorities also checked 800 motorcycles and tricycles, of which 82 were immobilized.

According to Oumar Sacko, Director General of Land Transport and Traffic (DGTTC), the operation is intended to be long-term and will gradually be intensified. Its objective is to encourage citizens to comply with traffic regulations. He noted that when the national road safety strategy was launched, the approach consisted of 80 percent awareness campaigns and 20 percent enforcement, but that the trend has now been reversed.

This time, particular emphasis was placed on the inspection of two- and three-wheel vehicles, which account for nearly 40 percent of road accident deaths.

For his part, Kollo Roger Yéo, Police Commissioner General and Prefect of Police of Abidjan, said that the operations are continuing both day and night, with about 3,500 police and gendarmerie officers deployed across the country. The most frequent violations include the absence of a driver’s license and proof of insurance.
