Former Senegalese President Macky Sall has presented his vision for a reformed United Nations during a debate involving candidates for the position of UN Secretary-General, calling for a more inclusive and effective multilateral system.

Officially backed by Senegal, Macky Sall is highlighting his experience as head of state and his tenure as Chairperson of the African Union in 2022 to advocate for stronger representation of developing countries in global decision-making.

During the debate, the former Senegalese leader called for reforms to international institutions, arguing that the United Nations must better reflect global realities and respond more effectively to security, economic and climate challenges.

His candidacy comes as the United Nations begins the selection process for the successor to António Guterres. Consultations with members of the UN Security Council represent a key stage before a recommendation is submitted to the General Assembly.

Macky Sall has intensified his diplomatic campaign in recent weeks, holding discussions with international partners and UN member states to present his vision and build support for his candidacy.

Through his bid, Senegal aims to promote an African voice for the leadership of the world’s largest multilateral organization, with a focus on a more representative, fair and development-oriented United Nations.
