Power Outages: Emergency Program Worth Around CFA 32 Billion Underway to End Current Blackouts

An emergency program costing approximately CFA 32 billion is currently being implemented to put an end to the ongoing electricity outages, government spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly announced at the conclusion of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan-Plateau.

“While waiting for the national rollout of the electricity distribution network rehabilitation plan, this emergency program, costing around CFA 32 billion, is being executed and should put an end to the outages within a few weeks,” said Amadou Coulibaly.

He reassured that “the situation will be definitively resolved with the implementation of the national electricity network rehabilitation program. Instructions have already been given for the deployment of this emergency program.”

He explained that the current outages are mainly due to overuse of power cables, responsible for 80% of the outages, and overloaded transformers, which explain the voltage drops in certain neighborhoods.

“This increased demand during this period is due to the unusually high heat, about 14% above normal high temperatures, which has raised consumer demand and led to the overuse of all existing infrastructure,” he added.
