Rapper Gims Placed in Police Custody in Paris Over Organized Money Laundering Allegations

French-Congolese singer and rapper Gims has been arrested in Paris and placed in police custody as part of an investigation led by the National Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime, according to reports from Jeune Afrique.

According to the publication, the 39-year-old artist — who was the best-selling music artist in France in 2025 — is being questioned under a judicial mandate issued by investigating judges. A source within the prosecutor’s office confirmed to AFP that the hearing is being conducted as part of a formal judicial inquiry.

Authorities from the Democratic Republic of the Congo have also confirmed the arrest to Jeune Afrique. Contacted by the media outlet, his lawyer, David-Olivier Kaminski, did not respond to requests for comment.

Born Gandhi Djuna, Gims was reportedly arrested by the National Judicial Customs Service upon arrival at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. He was taken into custody shortly after disembarking from his flight, according to a source close to the case.

Congolese Officials Seek Clarification from France

Jeune Afrique further reports that two Congolese officials have formally contacted the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs — commonly referred to as the Quai d’Orsay — to obtain more information regarding the situation. At this stage, they say they have not received further details on the reasons behind the arrest.

From Côte d’Ivoire to Morocco and across the DRC, Gims maintains a strong network throughout Africa. In January 2022, he and his brother, Dadju, met with Félix Tshisekedi, who granted them diplomatic passports as ambassadors of Congolese culture.

In 2025, both artists were also actively involved in organizing the “Solidarité Congo” charity concert held in Paris.
