Regional Integration: ECOWAS Celebrates 50 Years in Yamoussoukro and Calls for a Fresh Impetus

Yamoussoukro hosted a ceremony on March 28, 2026, marking the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The event, held at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Foundation, brought together political leaders, diplomats, and regional experts.

Founded in 1975, ECOWAS aims to promote economic and political integration among its member states. Five decades later, the celebration provided an opportunity to review the organization’s achievements and discuss future challenges.

Key accomplishments highlighted include the free movement of people and goods, strengthened intra-regional trade, and the implementation of several infrastructure and energy interconnection projects. These initiatives have helped bring the economies of member states closer and facilitated mobility within the community.

However, participants also noted persistent challenges in the region. Security threats from terrorism, unconstitutional changes of government, and political tensions remain major obstacles to deeper regional integration.

Speaking at the event, Ivorian Minister of Economy, Nialé Kaba, called for a “new impetus” for ECOWAS. She emphasized the need to strengthen solidarity among member states and adapt the organization’s mechanisms to current realities in West Africa.

Amid ongoing security and political crises, calls for reform and revitalization of ECOWAS are growing. Experts stressed the importance of more effective governance and a stronger response to citizens’ needs.

With over 400 million inhabitants, the ECOWAS region represents a major strategic opportunity for West Africa’s economic development. The anniversary reaffirmed the commitment of member states to consolidate achievements while pursuing reforms to strengthen regional integration.
