space technologies: first african market for space solutions opens in abidjan

Abidjan, May 6, 2025 – The Minister of State and Minister of Defense, Téné Birahima Ouattara, officially opened the first edition of the African Market for Space Solutions (MASS) on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the Abidjan Port-Bouët Exhibition Park, under the theme: "Space Solutions for the Socio-Economic Development of Africa."

This event, organized by the African Union through the African Space Agency, the Ivorian government, and in collaboration with the private entity OTIF Africa Space, was presided over by Ouattara, who emphasized that MASS aligns with the vision of President Alassane Ouattara, who sees technological innovation as a key driver for a progressive Côte d'Ivoire.

According to him, the issues surrounding space technologies are directly related to sovereignty, stability, and security in African nations.

"In this context, our country cannot remain on the sidelines of this dynamic. That’s why the Ministry of Defense of Côte d'Ivoire is committed to promoting space technological innovations, which are essential tools for defense and security strategies," he stated.

Beyond defense and security, he added, "Space presents a true opportunity for transformation in our economy, security, and youth."

"It represents a sector full of jobs, innovation, and technological sovereignty for future generations. That is why the government of Côte d'Ivoire is an essential player in this continental dynamic and a model of commitment to progress and technological mastery. To achieve this, it is crucial to develop a coherent, structured, inclusive national space strategy that aligns with the government’s priorities. This requires better synergy among stakeholders, pooling of resources, valuing local skills, and strengthening partnerships at all levels," he emphasized.

Co-patrons of MASS 2025, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Adama Diawara, and the Minister of Digital Transition and Digitalization, Ibrahim Kalil Konaté, reiterated their commitment to supporting the initiative.

Adama Diawara announced the creation of the Côte d'Ivoire Space Agency (ASCI) in 2026 and assured that ASCI would be a key partner of MASS, contributing to making it not only a platform for exchange but also a driving force for the design, validation, and deployment of African space solutions.

For Ibrahim Kalil Konaté, MASS 2025 is an exceptional opportunity to strengthen international collaborations, inspire future generations, particularly students and graduates. He called on researchers, teachers, decision-makers, entrepreneurs, and the private sector to invest heavily in these solutions.
