The African Development Bank (AfDB) has announced the launch of a new continental financing platform aimed at supporting the development of the aviation sector in Africa. The initiative seeks to mobilize public and private capital to modernize an industry that remains underrepresented globally despite the continent’s strong potential.
According to information reported by the economic media outlet Sika Finance, Africa accounts for around 18% of the world’s population, yet represents less than 3% of global air traffic. This gap is largely attributed to limited aviation infrastructure, restricted access to financing for airlines, and a fragmented regulatory environment across the continent.
The new platform, part of AfDB’s broader aviation transformation efforts, aims to improve access to funding for projects related to the aviation industry. It is expected to support the development of airport infrastructure, fleet modernization for African airlines, and stronger connectivity between African countries.
The announcement was made during a forum on airlines, capital and connectivity held in Nairobi, Kenya, in partnership with the African Airlines Association (AFRAA). The event brought together policymakers, aviation industry leaders and investors to discuss strategies for strengthening the sector.
For the AfDB, the development of air transport is considered a key driver of economic integration across the continent. Improved connectivity could facilitate trade, support tourism, and contribute to the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Several studies project strong growth in Africa’s air traffic in the coming decades, driven by rapid urbanization, demographic expansion and the emergence of a growing middle class. Financial institutions therefore see increasing opportunities for investment in a sector widely regarded as underdeveloped but promising.
However, significant challenges remain, including the need to harmonize aviation regulations across African states, upgrade infrastructure and strengthen the financial sustainability of African airlines.
Through this new financing platform, the AfDB aims to help address these constraints and support the long-term transformation of Africa’s aviation industry.
