Côte d’Ivoire : $100 Million Expansion Planned for Séguéla Gold Mine

The Séguéla gold mine, located near the town of S Séguéla in northwestern  Côte d’Ivoire, about 480 km from Abidjan, is set for a major expansion as the country's gold sector continues to grow. Three years after entering production, its Canadian operator, Fortuna Mining, is studying a project to increase the mine's production capacity.

An investment of approximately $100 million would be required to expand the Séguéla gold mine, according to an update released by Fortuna Mining on Thursday, July 9. Still subject to a final investment decision, the project would strengthen an operation that has been contributing to Côte d'Ivoire's gold output since production began in 2023.

According to the feasibility study, the investment would increase the processing plant's capacity to 2.3 million tonnes of ore per year, up from the current 1.75 million tonnes. The expansion would include the installation of a new grinding mill, along with technical upgrades designed to improve gold recovery rates. Part of the funding would also be allocated to strengthening backup power capacity and related infrastructure.

The project forms part of Fortuna's strategy to further ramp up the Séguéla operation. The mine produced 152,426 ounces of gold in 2025, up around 10% from the previous year, with output expected to reach 170,000 ounces in 2026. The expansion proposal also follows the identification of additional underground reserves around the Sunbird deposit.

Before the project can move ahead, Fortuna must secure financing and obtain the necessary regulatory approvals. The mine is 90% owned by Fortuna Mining and 10% by the Ivorian government. If approved, the expansion could further strengthen  Côte d’Ivoire's position as one of West Africa's fastest-growing gold producers.
