Côte d’Ivoire and Marshall Islands establish diplomatic relations

Côte d’Ivoire and the Republic of the Marshall Islands have established diplomatic relations following the signing of a joint communiqué in New York on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nialé Kaba, and Marshall Islands Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Kalani R. Kaneko, signed the communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The ceremony took place at the Conference Room of the Permanent Mission of Côte d’Ivoire to the United Nations, in the presence of Ivorian and Marshallese delegations.

The official signing was preceded by a closed-door meeting between the two ministers and followed by a photo session.

Through the agreement, Côte d’Ivoire and the Marshall Islands expressed their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and developing relations based on solidarity, mutual respect and the promotion of universal values of peace and sustainable development.

Côte d’Ivoire’s participation in the ceremony reflects its commitment to expanding its diplomatic network and strengthening partnerships with island states.

The two countries share priorities including climate change, maritime security and the preservation of the oceans.
