Côte d’Ivoire ranked as the second-largest foreign investor in Burkina Faso in 2024, behind Canada, despite an overall decline in foreign direct investment in the West African country.

According to 2024 balance of payments data, the stock of foreign direct investment in Burkina Faso stood at 2,336.3 billion CFA francs ($3.9 billion) at the end of 2024, down from 2,458.9 billion CFA francs a year earlier.

Canadian investments accounted for 534.9 billion CFA francs, or 22.9% of the total, while Côte d’Ivoire held 284.7 billion CFA francs, representing 12.2% of foreign investment stock.

Russia ranked third with 257 billion CFA francs, followed by Morocco with 102.8 billion CFA francs.

The mining sector continued to dominate foreign investment in Burkina Faso, accounting for about 66% of the total stock, while financial intermediation represented another 18.5%.

Côte d’Ivoire’s position highlights the continued importance of economic links between the two neighboring West African countries, despite a broader slowdown in foreign investment flows into Burkina Faso.

The figures refer to the stock of foreign direct investment accumulated in Burkina Faso, rather than new investments made during 2024.
