CISSÉ Abdourahmane: From Modest Neighborhoods to the Decision-Makers' Table

This week, Incôte d'Ivoire highlights Abdourahmane Cissé, recently appointed Senior Adviser at Lazard, one of the most prestigious financial institutions in the world. His remarkable journey is a testament to hard work, dedication, and expertise.

An Exemplary Academic Journey

Born on August 6, 1981, in Abidjan, in the modest neighborhood of Treichville, Abdourahmane Cissé is the youngest of four children. Son of a construction worker and a housewife, he grew up in a humble environment, which instilled in him a strong determination to succeed.

After attending Vridi Collectif Public Primary School, followed by the Collège d'Enseignement Général (CEG) in Port-Bouët, he earned his high school diploma with honors in the "C" series from the Lycée Moderne in Grand-Bassam in 1999. His schooling in the public education system not only shaped his character but also fueled his ambition.

His academic journey continued in France, where he joined the prestigious École Polytechnique (X2001), and later earned a master’s degree in economics and management of petroleum resources from the French Institute of Petroleum (IFP School), completing his outstanding academic training.

A Brilliant Career in Investment Banking

In 2005, after his studies, Abdourahmane Cissé joined Goldman Sachs in London, where he began his career in investment banking, specifically in the commodities department. His rapid progress at the bank saw him rise to positions of responsibility, notably as Vice President / Executive Director, overseeing the trading of volatility and dividends on Eurozone indices. This experience allowed him to develop a sharp expertise in financial markets and risk management.

His expertise quickly caught the attention of the Ivorian government. In 2012, he was appointed Adviser to the President of the Republic for Public Finances, a key role in managing the country’s public finances. In 2013, he became Chief of Staff at the Prime Minister’s Office, responsible for Economy and Finance. Later that year, he also assumed the position of Minister to the Prime Minister, in charge of the Budget. These responsibilities solidified his central role in the country’s economic management.

In 2018, he was appointed Minister of Petroleum, Energy, and Renewable Energy, a critical sector for Ivory Coast’s economy. Since March 2021, he has also held the position of Secretary-General of the Presidency, further strengthening his place at the heart of the country’s political decisions.

International Recognition and Distinction

In 2017, Abdourahmane Cissé received global recognition when he was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. This honor is awarded to leaders under 40 who have had a significant impact in their respective fields, acknowledging his role among the future leaders of the world.

A Model of Ambition and Discipline

In a talk in February 2022 with 500 students from Lycée Moderne in Port-Bouët, Abdourahmane Cissé shared his story and emphasized the importance of hard work and discipline: "It is possible to study in the modest neighborhoods, like Port-Bouët, and reach the highest levels of government." Today, with his appointment at Lazard, this message has evolved: "It is possible to start in modest neighborhoods, like Port-Bouët, and reach global heights in a prestigious institution like Lazard."
