The President of the Republic, His Excellency Alassane Ouattara, officially announced his candidacy for the 2025 presidential election on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
The opposition was quick to respond. In a statement issued by its Secretary General, Damana Pickass, the PPA-CI, the party of former President Laurent Gbagbo, expressed strong indignation over President Ouattara’s declaration.
"You all know our principled position on this fourth term. We reaffirm that it is unconstitutional," stated Damana Pickass, who made it clear that for the PPA-CI, a fourth term would be a violation of the Ivorian Constitution.
"This is why we want to reiterate once again, here today, firmly and solemnly, our opposition to this fourth term," he emphasized.
While calling on supporters to mobilize, Damana Pickass hinted that President Gbagbo would very soon make a public statement on the matter.
