African agriculture: Bruno Nabagné Koné calls for stronger agricultural sovereignty

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Food Production, Bruno Nabagné Koné, has called for stronger agricultural sovereignty in Africa during the opening of the 12th Regional Workshop dedicated to the implementation of projects by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in West and Central Africa (WCA), combined with the 3rd Regional Farmers’ Forum (R-FAFO).

The event took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel, in the presence of delegations from 23 countries, highlighting the regional importance of the meeting and the key challenges facing agricultural development across the continent.

In his address, the Minister stressed the need for African-led solutions to major challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, and youth unemployment. According to him, these issues require coordinated, ambitious, and locally grounded responses.

Bruno Nabagné Koné also praised the role of IFAD, highlighting its significant contribution to financing and supporting agricultural projects across Africa. He recalled that agriculture remains a key driver of economic growth, social inclusion, and stability on the continent.

He further reaffirmed Côte d’Ivoire’s five key agricultural priorities: food sovereignty, modernization of production systems, improved access to financing, secure rural land tenure, and strengthened resilience to climate change.

In this context, he advocated for policies that are more focused on farmers, in order to ensure sustainable improvement in their incomes and living conditions.

The regional workshop reflects a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation between West and Central African countries to build a more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable agricultural sector.
