Autonomous Port of Abidjan: A 16% Surge in One Year Signals Structural Growth
The Autonomous Port of Abidjan has posted a remarkable performance, reinforcing its status as a strategic gateway in West Africa. Cargo throughput rose from 40.1 million tonnes in 2024 to 46.6 million tonnes in 2025, marking a strong 16.1% increase in just one year.
This growth reflects more than short-term momentum. It highlights the strengthening role of the port as a central pillar of Côte d’Ivoire’s expanding economy.
National traffic drives expansion
One of the most striking indicators is the 20% rise in national traffic. While the Port of Abidjan has long served as a key transit corridor for landlocked countries such as Mali and Burkina Faso, current figures show that domestic economic activity is playing an increasingly decisive role.
In 2025, the port handled 1.69 million containers, underlining the growing intensity of trade flows, industrial imports, and export capacity. At the same time, transit traffic to Mali and Burkina Faso recorded a significant increase, confirming Abidjan’s importance as a regional logistics hub.
Structural rather than circumstantial growth
Port authorities emphasize that the expansion is primarily structural and internally driven. The figures mirror broader economic dynamics within Côte d’Ivoire:
– An expanding national economy
– A more active and diversified industrial base
– Strong domestic consumption supporting higher import volumes
In this context, the port is no longer merely a transit platform; it has become a direct barometer of the country’s economic transformation.
Regional leadership consolidating
With sustained double-digit growth, the Autonomous Port of Abidjan strengthens its competitive position among major West African ports. Continued investments in infrastructure modernization, logistics efficiency, and capacity expansion are likely contributing to this upward trajectory.
As Côte d’Ivoire deepens its industrialization and trade integration, the Port of Abidjan stands as both a catalyst and a reflection of national ambition—an accelerating engine at the heart of regional commerce.
