Nigeria officially began campaigning for the 2027 presidential election on Wednesday, August 19, opening a contest in which President Bola Tinubu is seeking a second term while opposition parties struggle to unite behind a single challenger.
The presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027. Tinubu, who is running under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), faces several opposition candidates, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi.
Opposition parties have attempted to build a united front against Tinubu, but disagreements over leadership and the choice of a common candidate have prevented the formation of a strong coalition.
Several opposition figures are still calling for unity, warning that a fragmented field could repeat the dynamics of the 2023 election and benefit the ruling APC.
Tinubu enters the campaign with a strong political network. According to the Associated Press, his party now controls 31 of Nigeria’s 36 governorships, strengthening its position ahead of the vote.
The election will take place amid widespread concerns over the cost of living and insecurity.
Tinubu's government has implemented major economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and changes to the foreign-exchange system. While the measures have been welcomed by investors and international lenders, they have also contributed to severe economic pressure on households.
Nearly 80% of Nigerians surveyed say the country is moving in the wrong direction, with economic hardship and insecurity among their main concerns, according to Reuters.
Security will also be a major issue, with kidnappings, banditry and other forms of violence continuing to affect several parts of the country.
The 2027 election will be a test of whether Tinubu can convince voters that his economic reforms will eventually deliver better living conditions.
For the opposition, the challenge is to turn widespread public dissatisfaction into electoral support while overcoming internal divisions.
Nigeria's campaign season has now officially begun. Over the coming months, the central question will be whether the opposition can unite strongly enough to challenge Tinubu or whether its fragmentation will once again work in the incumbent's favour.
