Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency: The Government Commits 39.3 Billion CFA to Finance the "Eastern Backbone" Transmission Line
The Council of Ministers, on March 12, 2025, adopted a decree ratifying a loan agreement of approximately 39.3 billion CFA for the financing of the renewable energy and energy efficiency program, which includes the construction of the transmission line known as the "Eastern Backbone".
According to the government spokesperson, Amadou Coulibaly, this project is part of the construction of a 400 kV transmission line in the East, which will involve the construction of four 400 kV substations connected by a 541 km line.
This line, as explained by Amadou Coulibaly, will run from the Anyama substation to the future Ferkessédougou II substation, passing through the future Daoukro substation and the existing Sérébo substation.
Ultimately, the Eastern Backbone will not only ensure the evacuation of thermal electricity production from Greater Abidjan to the interior of the country and the evacuation of solar power production from future solar plants in the North and East of the country, but also help reduce production costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, it will guarantee optimal export capacity to neighboring countries while preserving the stability of the national electrical grid.
