🇨🇮🇯🇵 Côte d’Ivoire and Japan are strengthening their partnership to enhance border management and improve security resilience in northern Côte d’Ivoire.
On July 6, 2026, the Minister of Interior and Security, General Vagondo Diomandé, Japan’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, H.E. Junji Gomakubo, and IOM Côte d’Ivoire Chief of Mission David Preux launched a new initiative aimed at strengthening border management capacities and supporting communities facing security challenges.
Funded by the Government of Japan and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the project will support Ivorian authorities in developing a more integrated, sustainable, and efficient border management system.
The launch event also highlighted the successful pilot deployment of the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) at the Kalamon border crossing. This digital solution is helping modernize border operations by improving the registration, monitoring, and analysis of cross-border movements.
This initiative represents a major step toward data-driven border governance, stronger institutional coordination, and more informed decision-making.
It is part of Japan’s support for the continental initiative “Making Borders Smarter,” which promotes safe and regular mobility pathways, regional integration, and innovative technology-based solutions across Africa.
