Côte d'Ivoire Football Federation Reassures Fans After Shooting Incident Near Team Base in Delaware

The Côte d'Ivoire Football Federation (FIF) has reassured supporters and the public that the national team was not affected by a shooting incident that occurred Tuesday near its World Cup base in Wilmington, Delaware.

The incident took place Tuesday afternoon at or near Wilmington Hospital, part of the ChristianaCare health system. According to local authorities and U.S. media reports, a gunman opened fire, injuring two people before law enforcement intervened. No members of the Ivorian delegation were involved in the incident.

In a statement released shortly afterward, the FIF said the national team, coaching staff and delegation remained safe and that their activities were continuing as planned.

“The national team has not been affected in any way by this incident,” the federation said, adding that the delegation was staying in a secure environment and maintaining its preparations for the tournament.

The federation also thanked FIFA, U.S. authorities and security services for their coordination and efforts to ensure the safety of participating teams throughout the competition.

Côte d'Ivoire is using Wilmington as its base camp during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team's presence in Delaware has attracted significant attention from local officials and the West African community in the region.

While investigations into the shooting remain ongoing, the Ivorian delegation said it remains fully focused on its World Cup campaign. No changes to the team's schedule or preparations have been announced.

The incident comes as security remains a key priority for organizers of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
