Nigeria Emerges as Potential Lithium Frontier as Australian Firm Expands Exploration Activities

An Australian mining company, Chariot Resources Limited, has announced the discovery of lithium-rich mineral deposits in Nigeria following the approval of six mining licences by the country’s mining regulator, according to industry reports.

The licences, issued by the Nigerian Mining Cadastre Office, cover several exploration and small-scale mining projects and mark a further step in the company’s expansion into Nigeria’s emerging critical minerals sector.

Lithium, a key component in batteries used for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, has become increasingly strategic in the global energy transition. The discovery adds to growing interest in Nigeria’s mineral resources, as the country seeks to diversify its economy beyond oil and attract foreign investment into mining.

While details on the scale and commercial viability of the deposits have not yet been disclosed, the development underscores Nigeria’s potential role in global supply chains for critical minerals.

Analysts say West Africa is gradually gaining attention as a frontier for lithium and other battery-related minerals, driven by rising global demand and the expansion of clean energy technologies.

However, they also note that infrastructure gaps, regulatory challenges, and environmental concerns could shape the pace at which the sector develops.

If confirmed at scale, the discovery could position Nigeria as a new player in the global lithium market.
