Côte d’Ivoire: Abidjan airport records 2.29 million passengers in 2025 amid mixed performance

The Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport in Abidjan handled 2.29 million passengers in 2025, reflecting a generally subdued passenger traffic trend despite a slight recovery observed in December, according to economic data.

The figures suggest that overall passenger traffic remained under pressure during the year, even as the airport showed signs of gradual stabilization following previous fluctuations.

At the same time, the airport posted a solid performance in cargo and transit operations. Freight traffic rose to 35,022 tonnes, up 7% year-on-year, while direct transit traffic increased sharply by nearly 30%, reaching 230,680 passengers.

This strong growth in transit reinforces Abidjan’s role as an emerging regional hub for air connectivity and logistics in sub-Saharan Africa, supported by its strategic geographic position.

Despite weaker passenger demand, the rise in freight and transit activity highlights a shift in the airport’s operational profile, with increasing importance in cargo handling and regional passenger connections.

Analysts note that this dual trend declining or stagnant origin-destination traffic alongside rising transit flows reflects broader structural changes in West African air transport networks.

Overall, while passenger numbers remained under pressure in 2025, Abidjan continues to strengthen its position as a key aviation hub for West Africa, particularly in logistics and transit operations.
