A consortium led by Chinese construction giant CRBC is set to invest more than 120 billion CFA francs ($200 million) in the development of a major tourism and leisure hub in Songon, on the outskirts of Abidjan, as Côte d’Ivoire seeks to strengthen its tourism industry and diversify its economy.
The project, known as the Oriental Park of Songon, will be developed over approximately 120 hectares and is expected to become one of the largest leisure destinations in the country. The first phase will include a water park, recreational facilities for children, hospitality infrastructure, and other attractions aimed at boosting domestic and international tourism.
Officials say the initiative is aligned with Côte d’Ivoire’s broader strategy to position itself as a leading tourism destination in West Africa under the government’s “Sublime Côte d’Ivoire” programme.
The investment is expected to generate around 3,000 direct jobs and 1,500 indirect jobs, with local authorities emphasizing opportunities for young people in the Songon area. According to project promoters, approximately 90% of the direct employment opportunities will be reserved for local youth.
The project was officially presented in the presence of government representatives and executives linked to CRBC, one of China’s largest infrastructure companies with operations across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Authorities view the development as a catalyst for economic activity in western Abidjan, where rapid urban expansion and infrastructure investments are creating new opportunities in tourism, services, and real estate.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2027 following the planned groundbreaking ceremony later this year.
The Songon project reflects growing economic cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and China, whose companies have become key partners in the country’s infrastructure development, including roads, bridges, ports, and urban projects.
If completed as planned, the Oriental Park of Songon could significantly expand Côte d’Ivoire’s leisure and entertainment offering while supporting employment, local business activity, and tourism-driven growth in the Abidjan metropolitan area.
