Ghana: A Ghanaian passport granted to American streamer IShowSpeed

The Ghanaian government has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to American streamer IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., following his recent African tour. The announcement was made by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Known for his large online following, with more than 50 million subscribers on YouTube, IShowSpeed completed a 28-day tour across nearly twenty African countries. The stated aim of the journey was to reconnect with his African roots and to showcase the continent to a global audience.

According to Ghanaian authorities, the decision to grant the passport was based in part on the content creator’s family ties to Ghana. IShowSpeed has publicly stated that his mother is Ghanaian, a claim that was reportedly reviewed by the relevant authorities prior to the official approval.

During his stay in Ghana, the streamer took part in several cultural and media-related activities, generating significant international attention through live streams and social media posts. This exposure was viewed by officials as a means of promoting Ghana’s image abroad, particularly among young Western audiences.

In a public statement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs described IShowSpeed as a “worthy ambassador for Ghana,” noting that his influence and publicly expressed attachment to the country contribute to its cultural and symbolic visibility on the international stage.

This initiative forms part of Ghana’s broader policy of strengthening ties with the African diaspora, aimed at encouraging symbolic, cultural, and economic reconnections between Afro-descendants and the African continent.

However, no specific details have been disclosed regarding the exact legal implications of this naturalization, nor the precise conditions under which the passport was granted.
