South Africa generated an estimated $550 million in revenue from its defense exports in 2025. These exports included weapons, ammunition, and various military equipment supplied to 42 countries worldwide, including France, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.
Data indicates that the largest share of these exports was directed toward Europe, with ammunition accounting for the majority of transactions. Germany emerged as the leading buyer, placing orders worth approximately $180 million, primarily for artillery shells.
In addition, armored vehicles and aircraft were widely exported to African countries. Kenya, Ghana, and Malawi were among the main buyers of military vehicles. Aircraft were delivered to Iraq, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, and the United Arab Emirates.
Within Africa, South Africa stands out as one of the few significant arms exporters, while most other countries on the continent remain major importers of military equipment, primarily sourcing from Europe, China, Russia, and the United States.
