The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, H.E. Leonardo Santos Simão, has commended the Ivorian government and all political stakeholders for their efforts to ensure peaceful and orderly elections in Côte d’Ivoire.
Speaking in Abidjan on Friday, October 24, 2025, after a meeting with Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé, who also serves as Minister of Sports and the Living Environment, Mr. Simão highlighted the collective commitment to maintaining calm during the electoral period.
“Elections are always a major challenge for any nation. It is essential that all stakeholders play their role in ensuring a peaceful process,” he stated following the audience.
The UN diplomat praised what he described as the “very positive behavior” of the candidates, noting their mutual respect and courtesy throughout the campaign. He also acknowledged the government’s and security forces’ efforts to safeguard citizens and property during this sensitive time.
“The United Nations’ goal is to see peaceful elections, as a foundation for unity — so that all citizens can continue working together afterward to advance national development and progress,” Mr. Simão added.
This visit forms part of the UN’s ongoing support for Côte d’Ivoire’s electoral process, through continued dialogue with national authorities, institutions, and political actors, aimed at preserving peace and stability in the country.
