The incidents that occurred during the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations between Senegal and Morocco could have serious consequences for the Senegalese national team, both on a sporting and disciplinary level. While the country’s participation in the World Cup is not in question, several players as well as members of the technical staff could face major suspensions that may jeopardize their presence at the next World Cup.
Images broadcast after the match shocked the African football community: Senegalese players temporarily leaving the pitch in protest, reportedly at the instigation of their coach, as well as serious disturbances in the stands involving supporters. These incidents expose the Senegalese Football Federation to a fine ranging from €50,000 to €100,000, in accordance with AFCON regulations.
Even more concerning, several players and members of the coaching staff could receive suspensions of between four and six official matches, according to Spanish media reports. If confirmed, such sanctions could be served during major upcoming international fixtures, including World Cup matches. Matches to be played behind closed doors for Senegal, as well as a ban on the travel of Senegalese supporters, are also among the measures being considered.
Meanwhile, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has announced its intention to officially refer the matter to both CAF and FIFA, arguing that the interruption of the match following the penalty awarded to Morocco disrupted the smooth running of the final and undermined sporting fairness.
In a separate statement, CAF confirmed the opening of a disciplinary investigation, condemning the “unacceptable behavior” observed both on the pitch and in the stands. The African football governing body is currently reviewing all available footage before deciding on possible sanctions against those found responsible.
