CAF President Motsepe Announces Executive Committee Review of Disciplinary Code and Governance

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has announced the upcoming convening of a meeting of the Executive Committee (EXCO), the organization’s highest decision-making body outside the General Assembly. The meeting will focus on a comprehensive review of CAF’s regulations, with particular attention given to the Disciplinary Code.

According to the CAF President, the objective of this initiative is to strengthen the regulatory framework so that the confederation’s judicial bodies are equipped with adequate and effective tools to impose truly deterrent sanctions in cases of serious misconduct. The proposed reforms aim to better address behaviors that could undermine the integrity, credibility and reputation of African football.

This announcement comes amid a context marked by incidents during major CAF competitions, especially high-stakes matches that have generated widespread reactions across the African football community. Some recent disciplinary decisions have been viewed by observers as insufficient, reigniting debates over the effectiveness and scope of the current disciplinary mechanisms.

Patrice Motsepe emphasized his commitment to respecting the independence of CAF’s judicial bodies and to fully complying with decisions already rendered. He clarified that the planned reforms are not intended to challenge past rulings, but rather to adapt existing regulations to better meet present and future challenges facing African football.

Beyond the Disciplinary Code, the Executive Committee meeting is also expected to address broader governance issues, including refereeing standards and competition management, as part of CAF’s stated ambition to enhance transparency and professionalism within the institution.

The outcomes of this Executive Committee meeting will be closely watched by member associations, clubs, players and supporters, as CAF continues efforts to strengthen its governance and ensure a more credible and equitable environment for the development of football across the continent.
